External wasteages are in general bigger so they flow more which prevents boost creep when the internal wastegate can't flow enough.

Think of the exhaust gas as a square peg. An internal wastegate would be like a round hole, most of the gas can fit though but not all of it. As you try to shove more gas out the hole more builds up = boost continues to rise even though the wastegate is open. The external wastegate would be like a square hole, all the gas can fit through = no boost creep.

External wastegates are only needed on certain stock turbos when the boost is raised and some upgraded ones.

As for an open wastegate its kind of like taking your cat-back exhaust off, it will flow more which will in theory get you more HP. But it sounds like complete ass and if you have a big enough diameter exhaust it won't gain you much. I personally hate open wastegates. Plumb mine back into the DP please

A wastegate that dumps to freeair won't pass inspection either..

To add to this quote, it is best to plumb the wastegate dump at least 18" away from the turbo outlet and at an angle for better flow.

Well he meant that you shouldn't pass inspection, not that you wouldn't.

Go semantics!

yeah it does....i asked my sergeant over me for inspections about it, and it technically passes. as long as it doesnt leak in the shop (meaning idle and no boost conditions) it passes. even if it dumps under the car...

i asked about it cause i was curious, and had a Honda in that had an external gate dumped to atmosphere. it passed.

I've never seen a car come from the factory with a wastegate that was plumbed off of the exhaust.. ?

That's why it would fail. The lovely not stock = fail exhaust laws of VA.

Except in this case they actually make sense, go figure
