Default Throttle Cable Sticking

I was having a problem with the car not wanting to come back down to idle and with it sounding like it was misfiring while slowing down in gear. The throttle cable isn't returning completely to its resting state about 50% of the time. I can put my foot under the peddle and return it to resting state on both occasions and it fixes the problem every time.

All the articles I can find that mention cleaning them are from bikes and was wondering if the same held true for car cables.

Never had to replace/repair one before, so looking for a little insight.

89 Rx7 TurboII!

I verified its the cable by switching another cable in, can't use it permanently because its from a cruise control model and is half an inch longer.

Chain/cable lube is an acceptable band aid but is really for maintenance. If your cable is binding that bad replace it stat.

I wouldn't really call it binding, when the cable sticks, its maybe 500 rpm too high, so its just barely getting stuck. I can pull it out with my little finger, so its not too bad.

I'll try the cable lube, someone else just told me to use any kind of silicon lubricant to see if it fixes it.
