Default Starter problem (I know, I know)

Alright, here is the deal. The car starts intermittingly whether it has been run for a while or has been sitting. I loosened the starter up to test it after hearing a single click from the solenoid and a slight whining noise, after loosening it I turned the key on and the starter worked fine with plenty of torque/power. I bolted it back on to specs and it didn't work again. Anyways, this went on for about 10-15 minutes with the same scenario. I would loosen it and it would start, and after tightening it would just click.

What could be causing it to work when it's loose, but only intermittingly when it's tight? I checked all of the connections and the starter was recently rebuilt. I'm guessing that there may be something the starter is getting stuck on where the flywheel is occasionally. For now I'm just going to make a spacer since I don't have the time to tear it apart, but I would still like to know what's up with it.

Whats this on? If a spacer will fix it I wouldn't even worry about it if it's just a daily driver.

All I have is a daily driver, haha. I'm not worried about it whatsoever. I've got a 1/16 in thick sheet of brushed aluminum that I'll be cutting out when I get some time. I am just curious as to what could be causing it because I like to know things :-).

it probably wasnt shimmed properly when it was put on..causing it to be to tight against the flywheel
