Default Slight ticking problem

Just got a 97 lude from a guy on here and i love it but i notice a slight tick/knock in the motor. The engine runs great....idles perfect and all but that ticking noise just ruins it all!!!! There are no engine lights on so.....

It sounds like valves or lifters and someone said it could be timing...i am gonna go ahead and get the engine flushed and see if maybe it's just some sludge from the oil that i just had to replace because it was black as can be. I put in some good synthetic oil and some slick 50 but it's the same old thing...no better no worse...just tell me what you think or if anyone has had the same problem just let me know how it was fixed...thanks.

check and adjust your valves, maybe they are too loose

There is a tool you will need, go to Amazon.com and get it for like $13 (Tappet 10mm wrench). If you adjust the valves to the right tolerance (manual) and the ticking persists it is most likely the pins that hold the V-TEC rocker arms in place. I can't remember the name of them for the life of me.. but if you have a manual (which you should have by now) they have a breakdown of the head and parts (Haynes).

Good Luck!

Thanks man....im getting a shop down the road from me to do the work just to be safe....and i guess it could be the pins and i'll mention i to the shop guys if the valves aren't the problem.

Ya wut you have is called tappet, or tappet noise. It is cause by the lifters having too much space inbetween themselves and the rockers. I adjusted mine about 3 months ago. Hasn't made a noise since. You could easily do it yourself if you want to save some money. They will charge you a nice bit to do that, but it's all on how you look at it. The tools you would need are a 10mm wrench, flathead screwdriver, and a tool to measure clearance. Let us know the outcome of the car though.
