Default Shifter issues

Ok, let me start by saying that I'm not ignorant of cars and how they work, I've just never had transmission/shifter problems in any of my cars......so I have no idea where to begin.

I was driving in traffic for 30 min or so. Stop, 1st gear, stop, 1st gear and so on.
Anyway, finally get to my exit, go to shift into second and nothings there....

The car wont get out of 1st, and the shifter won't move horizontally to try 3rd or 5th.

The Clutch pedal still has pressure against it, and when it fully depressed, the clutch disengages fine.

Up until this point I have had 0 problems. Car has 84k on the clock.

Ideas?
Thanks driven

cant physically move the shifter into neutral, or any other gear

I check the transmission fluid whenever I do an oil change, last one was about 1k ago.

Can you shift it when the car is off? It may be the pressure plate if it shifts ok while the car is off. If it's still an issue with the car off check your shifter cables where they attach to the the shifter.

have you pulled the shift boot off and looked at the cables? Also check the shifter bracket, IIRC they may be made out of plastic and can break. Broke one in a 2000 focus twice but that was before Ford redsigned the bracket in 02.
