just find something that isn't too rough, but enough to do some work. I am not sure on the exact grit though. And use a power sander, I used a palm sander, to do part of my friends car, it took a while. but it was really find paper.

Then take it to a shop or it'll take you like 9 years man. No honestly it aint worth sanding it with just your hands. If you want to spend like $100 on a good sander then you can do it yourself. Unless some people here have some good ways of doin it by hand, just my opinion.

what are you talking about hondazccivic?

If you're just sanding down for paint, use like 500 grit paper and go over the entire car, make sure there's no shine in the paint left. Make sure you get it good or the paint/primer won't stick to it. It took me like 2 hours to do it. If you wetsand(just use water with the sandpaper) the paper will last a little longer.

Well usually when you sand down for paint, you take all the old paint off, thats what I was referring to. But if you want to do it the way carter has said, then do it that way, I am sure his way will work as good as any I suppose.

sand the car down with 500-600 grit paper, then go over it with a 3m red, or grey scuff pad, like said above, make sure theres no shine left in the clear, the primer will stick fine to that........
