Default Replacing valve stem seals...rope trick?

Well I need to do the valve seals on my car tomorrow, and I was reading if there was a way to do this without removing the head.

I came across a nifty article regarding a rope trick, or "indian rope trick", to keep the valves from dropping. Basically just cramming rope into the combustion chamber so the valves don't have anywhere to fall to.

It sounds like a solid idea, and I guess it shouldn't be that hard to accomplish.

Has anyone on here used this "technique" before? Any input regarding your experience with it?

Also does anyone that's done it before, live somewhere close by to kinda just offer your input as I do it.

I mean its pretty simple, but hands on experience > reading a book any day.

I could pick you up, you can smoke all my cigs, I'd just really like someone that's done it like this before to be there to make sure I don't fuck it up horribly.

You can get some lockwire, or any wire that is durable but can take some bending.

Simply rap the valve with the wire, twists the ends with pliers so that the wire practically puts a grip around the valve. That will give you enough hold to remove the retainers and keepers. Then once you have to remove the seals lift the seal off,and apply the same method to the lower end of the valve,vise-versa when putting on the seals.

The easiest way without having to remove any manifolds or the head. If you get sketchy with it and drop a valve, its just one more reason to get some machine work to the head

Hmm, doesn't sound too bad, and I already have some wire that would work perfectly. Thanks man.

Guess I'll try that and if I still can't manage, I'll attempt with the rope trick.

Trust me, there's no reason to spend more money on this motor unless I broke something.

do you have an air compressor?

If so i'd do it with air before i'd shove rope down a spark plug hole.

I've done it with the compression tester hose+air compressor and it works fine.

That was another idea someone brought up. I can't get to my compression tester tomorrow so I'd have to rent one to do it that way.

I'm trying to do the seals so this kid can buy the car, and now he's flaking on me 12 hours from when he's supposed to come get it.. still try to do em anyways.

+1, pressurize the cylinder.

Just keep an eye on leaking down, and dropping the valve.

How are the valves secured in that motor?

Leakdown / compression tester ftw... Anyway to pressure the cylinder to keep the valve from dropping...

I'm guessing keepers hold the valves in...

How you plannin on gettin the keepers out if you can't get a compressor on there? You a stout *****?
