Default Remote start in a VW, key programming

I'm doing a remote start in an '02 Jetta and need the key for the transponder module. My question: is there a way to copy the code from my existing key onto the new one without going to the dealership for it? They wanted $100 for the cut key and another hundred to program it. I found a blank key for $25 and was hoping that I can make out pretty cheap on this. Any information is greatly appreciated.

i only googled and found this info:

1) Sit in the car with the engine off and your driver side window rolled down. (so you have access to the outside lock)

2) Insert the new key into the ignition.

3) Insert the little valet key in the driver side door lock (outside the car)

4) Turn the valet key like you are locking the car, but hold it there.

5) While holding the outside key in lock, press the unlock button on your new remote for 2-3 seconds.

6) Let go of the button.

7) Press the unlock button again for 2-3 seconds. Now the code should register.

8) Let go and you should hear an acknowledgement beep. (the alarm honk/beep)

also, read this thread: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1216091

Heres a short clip:

"Programming the remote…
You can do this with either a VAG-COM or two keys of your car. But if you only have one key, then a VAG-COM (or your dealer) is your only solution. See the VAG-COM instructions here:
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-c....html

If you have two (or more) working keys of your car, then you also the option of doing it without using a VAG-COM. Just do the following:
1. Insert any one of the working keys into the ignition lock and switch to the ON position without starting the engine.
2. Using any of the remaining keys, manually lock your car from the outside.
3. Press either LOCK or UNLOCK on the remote (to be programmed) once, then wait 2 seconds.
4. Press either button again once.
5. Switch off ignition and remove key from ignition.
6. You should hear a beep as a confirmation that the programming is completed"

Thumbs up Re: Remote start in a VW, key programming

well heres the issue with your question, when you say program, I feel your issue is getting the immo to match with your key.

Now, since your immo2 there is a possibility of doing it yourself but it requires using 2 keys, which it seems you have. but u must have your valet as well. If thats the case then:

Put your spare key in the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the car. Make sure to close all the doors. Put in valet key into drivers lock and turn it to the left (unlock position) and hold it.
The car will beep 3 times (may or may not) Let go of the key so it sits in the lock
With each of the new remotes, separately, press the unlock button. Each button will cause a "HONK" (may or may not)
Turn the key to the left again until it beeps.
Remove your spare key from the ignition.

oops...didnt see this was already posted....+1

Ok, sorry guys, I'll specify the best I can.

I have 1 key. That key is just that. A key. It is not the switchblade type with the lock/unlock/trunk/panic. I imagine the car came with it initially, but I don't have it.

What I am hooking up is a keyless entry/remote start. I'm trying to hook it up to the factory alarm. I know I need the VAG-COM to program the key's transponder, but that is also like 7 grand lol. I think I might just bite the bullet on this...

the only thing you can use is a module from DEI the people that make viper and hornet and so on, the have what they call a DLPK it will let you use the key you have to programme the module and thats it you only need one key and you dont have to leave one in the module. this is a new module they just came out with so you may or may not find it at your local car sereo shop but they can get it if they are a DEI dealer but be for warned they can be a bit of a headache but it will work and it will also do door locks through the data wires in the obd port

thats just fine, the key you have is the VALET key....which is still a key, just not a fob like the regular key...

the valet still has the immobilizer coded so u can still try with programming another key
