Question for you guys ho have painted cars...

Thinking about painting my track car.
What kind of paint do you use on side skirts, mirrors, and the door bumpers?

I'll be doing my own body work and removing all of these parts. The body will still be white and the side skirts, mirrors and door bumper will remain black. I used some paint that said it was for automotive trim on my mirrors, but it seems to have gotten really hazy and leaves a dark residue on the door after it rains or I wash the car.

Any help would be great.

use higher quality paint, clear is optional (track car) the most important part of painting plastics is the primer you use, I would suggest a plastic primer called "bulldog" it works great, ive used it from my front bumper, to a dewalt radio, works great.

if its just a track car why not just use some quality enamel?

I have to admit I have no idea about paint. What is considered "quality enamel"?
I do know is that MACCO is running a special on their elchepo paint job. And I'll do my own body work (there's really not much) and prep and have them shot the car. I just want to clean up some of the pastic bits the door bumpers are looking kinda crusty, and the mirrors are hazey black and the side skirts I figure should match....

Do you drive it on the street much? If not, do something wild with it, don't just respray it.

call mattos or laines auto motive or a paint secialist , Dupont and PPG makes a special 2 stage or acrylic for trim pieces and skirts, bumper what not its a flex paint .. and is actually reasonably cheap

go to harbour freight and buy a 20 dollor conventional gravity feed spray gun..... use it one time. dont take it apart whatever you do. run thinner through it between primer base and clear. keep the pressure high and use a full panel side to side with as close to a 50% overlap. try and keep the gun at 8 - 14 inches away from surface. for clear lay your clear with the pressure high. then try lowering it on the final coat with a fine mist leaning towards 14" distance.

get your body work to 320 then wet sand with 320.... for a better job you could take it to 600 wet. it wouldnt hurt.

if your painting white you might want to primer the whole car with gray and add some white base to the sealer..... tip

Do not under any circumstances try to take a bug or any trash out the paint. unless of course its like a pine needle. bugs??? leave em be and wetsand em out.

you will need

gallon thinner
gallon wax grease remover
bag of rags.
green or blue 3m masking tape
no bulldog needed.
gallon of clear.
gallon reducer..... id say medium if you got a nice warm garage or shop to use.
quart of base id say in case you have problems.
respirator.
good lighting.

as for the paint usually its poly uerethane and the primers are an epoxy uerethane. dont buy autozone paint thats a laquer and itll take a year to dry.

go to sherwin williams or any local auto body paint supply place. i recommend hop's place in hampton as theres a bunch of really cool. old people that might shoot you some pointers..... but as with anyplace stick to a shopping list cuz there are tons of thinks you might think you need that you dont.....

i would suggest base clear as it will pretty much repairable as far a spray defects go in th clear. you can sand and buff out the orange peel or some of the pin holes.

if you use single stage..... im not too sure the result for a wetsand and buff with that....... but its deffinately cheaper. i think it might be around 120ish for a car maybe less at sherwin williams for single stage and reducers. where a 2 part base, reducer, and clear might be around 200 220 ish. sherwin williams can hook you up with a cash account with discounts cuz they are hurtin for biz. too

duane might throw some pointers..... for a first timer like yourself..... but then again he might shoot you a good deal for a scuff and shoot. hes human and loves making deals.
