ok. i have a 2000 honda civic lx with a 94 del sol d16 swapped into it. my roommate did the sswap and kept the original wire harness and ecu is what im told.
that cars fine at certain rpms but stutters the majority of the time.
my check engine light is on for a crank position sensor.
finally someone fairly knowledgeable told me thats bc i have the wrong ecu for the motor and i need to run an obd1 (p06) ECU and use a jumper\harness.

1st question should i use the p06 ecu?

would that be the same ecu that was in teh del sol?

2nd question is the jumper harness that reads obd2B to obd1 correct?

The OBD generation is determined by the ECU and nothing else. The ECU does the diagnostics. If it's a D16Z6 (SOHC VTEC), you'll need a P28, or you could use that P06 if you get someone to add the VTEC parts internally. The P28 and P06 are the same ECU but the VTEC parts are left unpopulated inside the P06. You would also need to get the P06 chipped so it can run the stock P28 program or be able to be tuned.

The crank position sensor that the ECU is looking for is actually the OBD2 crank fluctuation sensor which is missing on the D16. Doesn't matter though, you aren't going to be using that ECU anyway.

ok first, thank you for the response.
i just checked the engine code on the block and it said d16z6 so i guess it was a vtec. so what jumper harness and ecu do i need to order?
do i still get the obd2b to obd1 jumper harness and then a p28 MT ecu?

Yes, OBD2b to OBD1. P28. If you find a automatic trans P28 for cheap, that can be used also. It just needs a small modification inside to tell the ECU to use the manual trans program instead of the auto trans code. It doesn't need to be chipped though, just a few jumpers changed with a soldering iron.

Two different generations of OBD2. The harness pinout and plug positions are different.

let me get this straight though. for me to get my vtec to work i need to get a wire from the ecu to the vtec hooked up?
im looking at a chipped p28 on ebay that comes with a 1 wire vtec option

If you use a non-vtec ECU, you CAN make vtec work by a switch. Google would help you a lot.

Yes, you need a wire from the VTEC solenoid to the ECU. You also need a wire from the VTEC pressure switch to the ECU so that the ECU knows there is enough oil pressure for VTEC to work correctly. A 1-wire VTEC option has the pressure switch input disabled in the program, so the ECU doesn't look for the oil pressure switch. It's a pretty useless option because it really only gets rid of a small amount of work (running an extra wire) and also gets rid of a minor operational check (the oil pressure switch).

1-wire VTEC outputs are really only useful for ECUs that don't have an input for the VTEC pressure switch, like the OBD0 PM6 ECUs that we used to convert to have a VTEC output. It's pretty useless on something like a P28, and there is no reason I can think of that a 1-wire VTEC option would be a benefit on a P28.
