Default noob rim advice

Hey i just got a 01 Jetta 2.0 and i was hoping to find some advice on rim/tire size. I am thinking of either 17's or 18's but not sure which size rim and tire combo would fit. It's stock height now and i would possibly lower in the future. The rims i'am looking at will supposedly fit a MK IV with a 5x100 bolt pattern and a 35mm offset, does this sound right? This is a daily driver not trying to slam, stretch, poke. Thanks now for any and all advice.
