Miata odd sound on bumps
I just picked up a 91 Miata. It needs some work but most importantly it makes a hollow sound when i go over bumps or dips. It sounds like the wire is wobbling and the lugs are loose but i checked them because it scared the shit out of me and they're tight.
It has 169,000 on it so my best guess is that the stock struts and springs need to be replaced but I can't justify that sound coming from the suspension in my mine, though I guess it makes since because it only happens when I go over bumps/dips.
And advise or input would be appreciated.
OFF TOPIC HELP: When I turn the wheels all the way it makes a squealing sound. I don't know it it's a bad power steering belt or pump but it only happens when I turn the wheel all the way to where it wont turn anymore.
Thanks

could be the strut mounts or struts them selves. if your replacing the one , you should replace the other while your at it, they are connected any ways.
the whining noise you are hearing is most likely the pump ( FORDS ARE USUALLY NOISE STOCK , ONLY WHEN YOU TURN AND HOLD ON EACH END AND SOME MAZDA PARTS ARE FOOD PARTS ), check the fluid if you already have nt..
the post above JOINTS? HES REFERRING TO BALL JOINTS
HOPE THAT HELPS

Re: Miata odd sound on bumps
I'm putting on new struts and lowering springs this week. If the sounds doesn't stop I'm going to replace the struts and bushings but I'm really hopping the new parts will fix it so I don't have to spend any more money, besides I'm pretty excited about dropping it.

thanks for the advice btw.
the fluid is topped on the powersteering pump. i might go by a new one with my paycheck and throw it in.

Try to not create 3 threads next time, OK? I just Black Holed the other two.
The sound you're hearing over bumps is either the struts or suspension bushings. Could be sway bar links also.

Re: Miata odd sound on bumps
I would highly recommend checking the swaybar bushings. I cant tell you how many times Mazda owners came in with a "clunk" complaint. It was the bushing 99.999999999% of the time. Its a cheap and easy fix too.
