Late 90 Ford Explorer ball joint replacement...
When we brought the explorer for inspection they said that the upper & lower ball joints were an issue and should be replaced since then the truck has been sitting until the cash flow came up to get it fixed.
Other than going to Ford dealership to get raped what other options do i have as far as getting the parts, i work at advance auto parts but theres somethings that even i wouldnt buy from there lol.
Are they a pain in the ass to replace? And is it easier to get the whole joint or just the bushing?

They are def a pain in the ass if you haven't done them before. The labor guide calls for like almost 9 hours to do all 4 on a 4wd model.
It doesn't take that long with a lift, the right tools, and some experience.

Re: Late 90 Ford Explorer ball joint replacement...
I'm confident i can get them done just looking for some pointers. I've never done ball joints before but i got enough hands up this way in fredericksburg to lend a hand or two, mainly just posted this to get some ideas on how to make this more simple to get done without extremely hurting the pocket....

I suggest taking it to a shop (cost should between $400-500). But, if you want to try and do it yourself, it's not too bad, just time consuming.
The uppers are fairly easy, as it replaces the whole upper control arm. The lowers require removal of the spindle, which sucks, because it's 4 wheel drive. You'll also need a ball joint installation tool.
Get a Helm's manual and read up before you start tearing it apart.

WHOA!
I can't tell you how many times I've replaced the upper and lower ball joints on 2nd Gen 4WD Explorers!
First, the lower ball joint MUST be replaced, no replacing just the bushing.
Second, the upper ball joint is permentantly fixed to the upper control arm, so you must install two new upper control arms.
To do the job, "rent" (which from AA is actually buying then returning) the U-joint/ball joint puller kit. Buy two lower ball joints, and two upper control arms. Thats all you need.
Follow the steps in this thread: http://explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188225
Or this thread: http://explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194453
PM me if you need anymore advice.

BTW, this is a very easy job to do on your own. It will take you probably 4 hours.

please just remember that the lower ball joint pushed out towards the ground, otherwise you'll have a sore arm!
