Default Jump the starter?

Is there a way to jump my starter to see if needs replaced or if its something else?

battery charger
positive to the positive bolt and negative just as a ground

may not have the amperage.

Any autozone can test it out, or using sive ick's theory, just run some jumper cables from the battery and do the same thing.
