It's the same NV3500
New venture gear is the manufacturer the 5.3 and 4.8s both got the same tranny.
Dodge also used it in some of the ram 1500s
Among a handful of other vehicles.

Get the truck for 1500-2000. You can get a junkyard engine for 600-800 all day depending on location, shipping, etc.
OR you could find an older LS based 1500 in the $3k price range they pop up all the time.

And why are manual trans trucks so incredibly rare?

As long as maitenance has somewhat been done, they last forever. and they are super cheap to fix when they blow up.

Re: Work truck buying dilemma....It's broken but it's cheap!
I went through this not too long ago. I was looking for a Chevy pickup in the $3k range. Everything I found was either a) taken care of but the mileage was in the 250k-300k range, or b) mileage was decent but the truck was beat to crap and not taken care of. All of the one's that had reasonable mileage and were taken care of were out of my price range. I ended up getting a 99 Tahoe with the 5.7L Vortec in it instead. Has like 190k on it, but was well taken care of, plus it was the "road trip" car for the lady I got it from, said she used to drive it to and from GA and PA, so she racked up miles, but all highway. Talked to a friend of mine who works service at a Chevy dealer, said he see's the older 5.7L's all the time with 300k plus and still running strong.
For some reason Tahoes and Suburbans seem to be a noticeably cheaper than comparable pick ups. I have an 8 foot trailer, so if I really need the space I'll pull that, otherwise the seats in the Tahoe flip down and there's basically the same bed space as a 6' bed pickup, just less headroom.

I hate buying cars. I just found some scary shit on a carfax that wasn't reported in the ad, and the mileage was almost 75k underreported. I'll probably never find out what the accident was, but it was sold at auction right after that so it's either going to be a trade-in or insurance writeoff. Don't care, there's other stuff out there.

I wish I could buy something nice and newer, but that's going to dent my garage fund.
