The thermostat gasket should have a split all the way around it which is where the rim of the thermostat slides in it. Should be a recess in the rubber where the little metal thing (whatever its called) should be in. Then it should fit perfect.

Most pre-98 Honda's have them. Reason being is that the t-stat housing is higher than the radiator fill. So air gets trapped. If it has a bleeder valve, make sure you use it or it is gonna over heat. Fill the radiator, crack open the bleeder and fill the radiator with more coolant until it starts running out of the valve. Close valve and fill radiator the rest of the way. THEN you can start the car.

i always just fill my shit and let it run till it gets hott and the thermostat opens then fill it up once all the air leaves the system then i put the radiator cap on sounds easier to me
