if you have a stock exhaust and you want to hear if it is working or not, disconnect the intake tubing from your air box and run down the street real quick (your car needs to be at normal operating temp.) But dont keep the filter off for too long. It is just to know if vtec is actually working or not. If you dont have a stock exhaust it would be pointless because you wont be able to hear it over your exhaust anyway.

The best way to tell is check your fuel efficiency. Which is about all VTEC is good for in your particular set-up. Seriously, it doesn't matter whether it's hitting or not, you won't know the difference anyway.

Your probably low on vtec fluid. But seriously you drive an auto. Even if you drive the car hard, it still shifts at about 5-5.5K, which is where vtec engagement is. So your car will not hit vtec anyways, unless you manually shift it.

I believe the cam in D series motors stays the same between auto and 5 spd. I know that there is a slight difference between the si and the ex models but nothing major...
