Guys with Dseries experience GET IN HERE. tranny issues?
 

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read & hopefully leave some feedback on my thread.
first off the car is a 1998 civic ex.
i swapped a d15b7 three-stage-vtec from Jspec 4 years ago
the car is still using the original d16y8 ex tranny (don't know trans codes)

when i swapped the motor i replaced the clutch/flywheel/throw-out bearing with the Exedy oe spec kit.
its done amazing with no pop out or grinds.

onto the new bad info:

its recently started having some drag when accelerating, especially anything over 2500rpm.
its a little noisy, nothing that makes me think of trans failure. but sounds more like a bearing in some serious stress.

when i push the clutch in, the noise quiets down tremendously, then as soon as clutch pressure is released, its right back to the same whining noise. this tells me it shouldn't be the throw out bearing.

how likely is it i could have chipped a flywheel tooth? and also the trans has 220k on it, but NO grinds or anything bad. so would it sound like it could even be an issue within the trans?

thank you for bearing with this long ass post, just trying to put as much info as possible.

*car still pulls decent to drive normally, haven't shifted over 4k, and its getting a little worse gas mileage.

its inside the trans. find another for 100 bucks in the horrible section know as the for sale section. or cl.

since its making noise with the clutch out, it indicates something inside the trans is causing the noise. i dont think a chipped flywheel tooth could cause any noise...

I had a d16 civic for a daily that was doing the exact same thing. It drove fine but made a horrible noise. I swapped the trans and the noise was gone. It's probably a bearing inside the transmission on its way out. With these cars, it's likely cheaper and easier to just swap the trans out rather than rebuild it

What exactly does the noise sound like? also check the trans fluid to see if it's low before you pull it

You will only know about a chipped flywheel tooth when you start the engine. Otherwise, nothing engages the flywheel ring gear at all so nothing touches the teeth.

Am I missing something?

Hey guys, I appreciate the replys. I usually just have my phone to log into, thats what im on now.
The noise gives the impression of exactly what you said, a bearing making its way out.
A whinning noise whenever the clutch is out, and louder when over 2.5k rpm. Also louder when under a stressful load, such as a turn.
*I replaced the trans fluid with honda genuine about 5 months ago. Did it myself, filled it till it overflowed out, and kept pouring to be 100% sure. Iv done all of my own work, the fluid was no issue. Ill check it again tho & top off.

Every transmission i have found says "third gear grinds/ hold reverse in...ect". All with miles nearing mine.
I just signed a lease for an appartment & i owe a decent amount in 2 weeks. How long do you think these transmissions can roll with no issues? If i can keep it for about 3 months i can replace everything the right way, without stressing bills.

Oh sorry, also meant to say motor runs/ starts fine. Just did a valve adjustment a month ago to (with myself & ase certified friend/mechanic) & everything is silent when clutch is in.
So you're all probably correct with it being an inner trans issue.

I appreciate all the help guys. Just further gratification of what my freind has said, so now i dont hafto go to honda to be sure :)

literally any d-series hydro transmission will work in your car, and as stated you shouldnt be paying too much over $100 for it. go to a pick and pull if all else fails, you'll have a 30 day warranty

Sounds like a throwout bearing in the trams but its going to be cheaper to replace than rebuild

does it make the bearing noise at idle with the engine running and your foot off the clutch pedal? if so, that's a bad input shaft bearing. i've replaced/rebuilt a handful of d-series transmissions and it's pretty easy if you're looking to gain insight on repairing them and how they work.

hondapartscheap.com or like majestic honda up in rhode island will sell you all the bearings/seals you need to rebuild it for ~$100, so its like the same price to replace as it is to refresh your current transmission. the only downside would be finding f'ed up dog teeth or a burnt syncro hub or something while you're in there.

here's some pictures of a recent rebuilt i did:
ISB sitting next to it's spot in the case. tap this out with a long extension from the clutch side of the transmission.

picture of the gear stacks pulled out of the case. you'll most likely want to disassemble these to clean the oiling holes. if your ISB does go bad, the plastic spacer that holds the ball bearings in place disintegrates and clogs the oiling holes on your main and countershaft. easiest thing to do is just have a large workbench and take pictures or number things as you pull them off. it's really no more difficult than sparkplugs once you get the transmission apart.

this is a picture of one of the gears, you'll wanna "scuff the cone" meaning take some fine sandpaper to the smooth part and take away any burn marks or hot spots. the dog teeth are the gear teeth above the actual gear itself. make sure those aren't too rounded.

a disassembled main stack. the gears on this one usually just slide up and off. no bolts or anything weird. just keep tabs so you know which order they should go back on.

disassembled countershaft. the bolt at the top of it is easy to get off with air, otherwise a vise with some wood blocks and a rag around the bottom of it and a breaker bar and you should be able to get the top bolt off. a gear puller will most likely need to be used to pull the top 2 bearings off of it.

itll probably keep driving just fine a good while. not saying you should let it eat but still.
