There's an old saying that I've heard over the years...

"Q: What does a 600hp, 700hp, 800hp, and 900hp Supra have in common?
A: A 10 second quarter mile"

What is the reasoning behind this saying?

Are the stock gears just not setup for a quarter mile? Is it just impossible to keep traction over 500hp? I've never owned a Supra or even worked on one for more than doing an oil change so I really never put forth the effort to research this. The little bit of background I've gathered over the years has led me to believe that its related to the stock gearing... but I'm not positive. Just wondering if anyone on here has the answer to this or at least some sort of rational explaination.

They run slow ET's in general because most of them are street driven cars therefore they roll on street tires. Street tires don't offer the necessary traction for good ETs..

Most street supra owners go for trap speeds or high dyno numbers..

A 10 is a pretty quick pass in a street-driven vehicle. Obviously the faster you get the more it takes to shave off just a couple of 10ths of a second. It's alot easier to drop from the 14's in the 13's than to go from 10's into the single digit range. So i'm sure unless the car is overhauled and modified strictly for track use(especially adressing traction issues) it wont break out of the 10's regardless of a few extra 100 HP.

I don't know much about Supras though so i'm sure one of the Toyota guys will show me a street driven-single digit Supra, essentially shining a spotlight on the ignorance of my previous statement.

We must be getting faster. The joke used to say "12second slips" and not "10 second slips".

I've just browsed through 4 pages of threads from a search of "supra 12 seconds" and I didn't see any thread titles with anything even remotely close to my question.

There's a lot of "Supra VS. ____" or "FS: xxxx Supra" or "Supra Photoshoot". I'm sure somewhere in there within the hundreds of pages that refer to Supras I could possibly find the answer I'm looking for, but ah well.

I'll just go register on a Supra board sometime and see if anyone responds.

a few people with a lot of money built powerful cars but couldn't buy the ability to drive. this started a dumb joke that people believe. if you browse the supra forums you'll find that the majority of the powerful supras pull ridiculously low 60's and quarter miles.
