Default Engine Rebuild Questions

Ok so heres the story, like a dumb ass I let my motor run low on oil and now it has a knock. I'm getting ready to pull it out and rebuild. The motor itself has less than 15,000 miles and if it matters its a 4g63. So heres my questions.

1. Are my rings still good or should I replace them?
2. What kind of machine work should I do to the block, such as honing the cylinders and whatnot?

and any suggestions on parts would be appreciated as well, like who makes the best bearings, or any other details I should be concerned about.

Thanks in advance

Rehone the cylinder.
You better hope your crank is good.
You better hope your block is good. If it got low enough on oil pressure/oil then you coulda fucked up the mains.

What bearings did the dude use when he built the motor?

I know nothing of these motors but I can lend you a hand in some way.

Get new rings and bearings. Take your crank and block to abacus and get seth to check it over.

oil starvation as jarrod said, new rings/bearings.

Whats the oil look like? Have you flushed it all?

And please allow a machine shop to hone your block, don't do it yourself.

Also. Start searchin' on the ring gap that these motors like. What power was it putting down? Research what people are putting their gap at around your power goal.

to be honest i haven't really touched it yet, i towed it over to my dads house yesterday so i could get a lil more room to work with.

Im pretty sure im gonna take the short block to abacus after i take everything apart, let them check everything out and then reassemble it.

As far as ring gaps from what I've looked up .018-.021 for the top ring and .023-.025 for the bottom seem common for the 350-500 hp range, so i might go just a tad bigger to be on the safe side, and the oil ring doesn't really need to be gapped and should be around .015

well if you are getting any machine-work, take it to Abacus. Seth and Chuck are great guys and will lead you in the right direction. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do machinework.

But yes, hone, new rings/bearings for sure.
