Default engine flooding

what would cause my 1.9L escort to flood after starting it a few times in a given amount of time.. say 30minutes.

if i drive to work, sit at work for 5minutes, head out to run to walmart across the street, then walk out of walmart and hop in the car.. it wont start..

does the idle valve have anything to do with this?

the reason i ask about the idle valve is that sometimes when i pull up to a light the car will try to stall out, and i have to stick it in neutral to keep the rev up.. then when i put it in drive it chugs for a second then starts driving normally.. a few times its stalled out after going to D

can you crack the throttle open and it starts?

if so, get an new IAC, sounds like the standard Ford idle issue.

i think ya got a combination of things.

IAC is one thing it will need. you can clean them sometimes, but they are not that expensive. i replace them myself, but that is cause i have to offer a warranty.

as for the no start.....do your check when it does it. fuel pressure, spark, injector pulse. or kick the shit out of it and go get a beer.

Ignition module is probably going bad. Check the dyelectric grease behind the module to see if its dried up and cracking. I had an Escort before :x.

hadnt thought of that - you think it overheats and just needs that 30min-1hr break to cool off?

good idea, thanks

im guessing with pre 95 fords i have to pull over the carpet and watch for the ECU to blink?

if the IM is bad, does it blink the entire time/startup, or just when it doesnt start? It seems like something overheats.. or just floods. it starts up 100% of the time when i havent driven it in an hour or two.. but if i start it up a few times within 30mins it has a problem

not nescessarily. on an OBDII car, maybe, but on an OBDI car, i doubt it. at least i havent had many do that.

its not a honda, you dont have to pull the carpet back to count flashes....

however....it is kinda tricky to get the codes out by jumpering. its easier to scan it to see.

get a friend to crank the car while you check for spark when it doesnt start. use either another plug on the end of the wire,or a tester. if you dont have spark, 9 out of 10 times its the POS module. they are not that expensive.

it could be other things, but that is the most common. i have two modules in my toolbox if that tells you anything

if it has trouble starting when ure car is warm, it sounds like a bad starter to me. when my starter went bad, it would start fine at a cold start, but if i drove somewhere and parked, then came back after 5 min she would not crank over. so i threw a rebuilt starter on there and she fires up really fast now all the time. but it also sounds like you have many other issues.
