Question Dead Battery... again and again...

Alright, I rebuilt my motor in my car and put it back in. It ran fine for about 700 miles and all of the sudden it appeared that the alternator died. I havn't replaced the alternator as of yet. I noticed when I put a jump pack to the battery while hooked to the car, it came out with a beep and a fault (like the wires were touching somewhere). So anyway, I was wondering just how far will a car drive on a good battery without having an alternator working? If it's a wiring problem wouldn't that have caused whatever is causing my battery to die to of happend when I first ran the car 700 miles ago?
