So was the boot torn prior to replacement?

If the boot has been torn and letting dirt/sand/debris into the joint for months, chances are the joint is too far gone. When an axle boot rips or tears, it must be replaced immediately. If you wait until you hear a clicking until you replace it, a new boot isn't going to help you.

Just replacing the boot, and cleaning it won't fix the axle if the joint is already broken.

Sounds like you need an axle.
