get BMW to give you the part # and match it to Pelican Parts #, should be the same
also the pic they have up on the site may not always be the correct one
if the part numbers match I would not worry about it

lookup the part based on your production month/year on realoem.com and order it from pelican parts. MAFs are not really cheap. Some of the e39 guys have used a certain model of VW MAF that is the same Bosch part number but cheaper thru VW, you could check that out.

You don't really want to drive around with no MAF.

P0102 means there's an open in there somewhere. You didn't unplug it with the key off, did you? If not then you borked it, sry.

Yeah, use electronic parts cleaner or intake cleaner and try to clean the wires inside.

It may run OK but MAF = fuel control.

word on the street is if the car it truly f'd it will go into "limp mode" to get home, however it apparently reads off other sensors to determine A/F as well to keep it running alright. either or tonight i'll be picking up a can of the cleaner and tonight/tomorrow i'll be working on it. yay. if its not fixed tomorrow i'm going to order a new MAF off pelican parts.

Just breaking the screen off can cause problems, because it can change the airflow velocity enough for the ECU to flag and out-of-range fault. It's not that the MAF doesn't work, it's that the ECU isn't calibrated for a MAF with a broken screen. That is, unless you broke the sensing element like you said.
