steam clean if you can find it, regular engine degreaser and a sponge and toothbrush and towel if you cant...make sure to get plastic bags wrapped over electrical stuff like your distributor, and try to keep getting stuff wet besides what you are trying to clean.

engine bright in the fuel additive section-

cheap so you can buy a lot, and do multiple applications.
and use a toothbrush.

i use greased lightning, or if you can find it oil eater works very well. if all else fails i just get some castrol super clean. i spray everything under the hood. but it comes out looking real nice!

that purple castrol stuff works great we have cleaned over 12 engines with that stuff.

I hot tanked and then painted mine. All I really need to do now is use a multi purpose engine cleaner and it looks brand new again.
