Default bad VSS getting mistaken as tranny problem

So....... I just bought a 95 Accord EX wagon with 170,000 miles on it. Long story short after driving it for a month one day the speedometer starting jumping around to 80,90,120 at idle. The next day the speedo stopped working altogether. The same day the transmission started shifting roughly and not at all at times. Then the infamous D4 blinking light starting flashing on my dash which means Trouble in the transmission in the manual. I knew it had to do with the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) located on the transmission but I still thought the tranny was taking a dump. I changed it with a new one from Bap Geon for $60 bucks and the car is fixed and the transmission is shifting smoother than ever with no slips.

I didnt know the vss was so important to the function of an AUTO tranny. It makes sense since the car needs to know the speed to shift the tranny. But it make me think How many people have paid a shop to put a whole new transmission because of this $60 dollar part going bad? .......................And How many shops have replaced the VSS and charged for a rebuild?
