Default Alternator issues

alright. i had to get an alternator for the tsi. advance had one, so i went ahead and got it from there, threw it on the car and headed to the gas station and car wash. the volt gauge is pegged past 18, and the headlights have burnt out. i was thinking about it, and it might be an automatic alternator, but im not too sure. the automatic alternator puts out 10 amps more than the manual. i havent looked too much into it, but do you think that 10 amps would shoot the voltage THAT high? i know people put higher amp alternators in car's/truck's and dont have a problem, so im thinking its a faulty regulator in the alternator. what do you think?

cliff notes:
• volt gauge pegged past 18 volts on brand new alternator
• headlights burn out from high voltage(maybe a fuse, havent checked too far)
• possibly an automatic alternator which puts out 10 amps more than manual
• what do you think?

Its probably the regulator. My friends maxima has a enhanced alternator because of his stereo and he hasn't had any problems with it.
