Reloaded

So a friend of mine has a 2002 Honda Civic and when she went to get gas this morning noticed the fuel door doesn't stay closed.

So I took a look at it and the entire latch mechanism is gone. Just a hole where it should be.

I found this photo of the car’s layout but I have a couple of questions.

1. Where the cable run, under the car or through the inside?
2. Where could the latch mechanism have gone?
3. What holds the latch mechanism to the body of the car?

The cable is run on the inside of the car in the trunk right near the rear seat bulkhead. I think that year had a push pull type lever where as the older ones have 2 levers. Pull the trunk side panel out and the upper portion of that cavity should be easy to access. The latch either twisted out of the hole or the tabs broke off, it is a push and twist if im not mistaken.
