Default 1st Gen Acura MDX problem

Really looking for any intelligent advice to point me in the right area, I have searched the interwebz to no avail, except to see many others reporting the same issue.

My wife's 2001 Acura MDX w/134k produces a really annoying brief vibration/shudder that I cannot localize to a specific area of the car. It occurs only when feathering the gas pedal or coasting at around 1700-1900 RPM. It lasts for 1-3 seconds and goes away as soon as I give it more gas or by itself. It does not feel like a misfire. There are no codes stored or pending, no lights, no leaks. The tranny was serviced as a part of the recall back in 2005.

I thought it was something to do with the suspension in the front end and I went through replacing what could be producing the shudder. Tires were aligned and balanced.

I next turned to the fuel supply and I didnt find any issues.

I have done the timing belt + all related crap, replaced the crank sensor and the plugs. It drove like a champ after the plugs then started doing the same thing after a few days. I checked the battery and the alternator and the voltages are correct. Could it be a faulty coil ? And if so why would it only misfire at that specific RPM range ?

I also discovered that if I have the AC off I almost never get the shudder

Anyone have any ideas ?

There is a list of recalls and common problems with most Acuras on Acurazine.com. I'll try to find it for you.

Here's one.

I couldn't find a lot on 2001 model year.

It is most probably something to do with the automatic transmission. Hence it goes away when you give it more gas, and is only around a certain RPM.

If youve ruled out all the other stuff, than look into that. Could be anything inside the transmission, or even something wrong with the electrical components of it.

Its a J series transmission, so there's always a good chance its a transmission problem. Those things love to break.

arrgghh... really not wanting it to be a tranny issue. Why would it happen only with AC on ?

OK it looks like it's a torque converter on the way out after all. Can anyone recommend a reputable shop/specialist to quote me a TC rebuilt/swap ?

Problem solved: clogged EGR ports and faulty EGR valve. Not a torque converter or transmission problem after all.
