1996 civic EX P0301 than wont start...help
STOCK 1996 civic 183K 5spd EX
Owned for 2 months always ran great got from original owner that was an old lady that had all maintenance done at Honda. Ran great till today.
Heading to work 45 MPH came over an overpass and was in 5th it the gas when the road flattened and it hesitated, I thought hmm never done that before so I dropped to 4th than 3rd same thing. Than CEL came on. Proceed 1/2 mile to work. Put it on a scanner P0301. I than pulled spark plug (1) boot and wire and it looked good so I cleared code and tried to start it again. Now it just turns over with no start. Check and there is no spark now.
Replaced the dizzy with a new one and it now starts and does not throw a code but it runs rough and feels like a miss. It does not rev like normal.
Replaced wires and plugs (look fine)and it started and ran smoother but still did not rev like normal. Drove it home to set timing. Feel like it surges and is about 50hp down on power. Figured it was timing related due to low idle.
With plug jumpered I can get it to about 2* maybe 4* but that is as far as the dizzy will turn? So I pulled upper timing belt cover and spark plug 1, put piston in 1 on TDC and when cam gear is lined up to TDC the crank pulley is about 3/4" retarded.
Did the belt jump?? What am I missing? This is an interference motor, think pistons have met valves? What do I check next....or just do a timing belt and pray?
Help.

Ok, so run a compression test. That will tell you if you bent valves. Your timing belt slipped from the sounds of it. Most of the time those engines don't actually bend valves unless you are at high RPMs when it slips or breaks.
If the compression test comes back good then Throw a belt on it and see what happens.

Set No1 piston to TDC
Loosen belt tensioner
Slip Timing belt off cam sprocket. Rotate "UP" mark is up and 2 lines line up with cylinder base
Replace belt etc
Step 1
Step 2
