04 VW GTI 1.8t Wont go into 1st gear , please read
Was driving home lastnight ... punched it in first gear from a 5 mph roll , missed 2nd gear shift , slight grind nothing major ... no knock or hard noises or anything. Got to the stop light in front of me and it wouldnt go into first gear .... first is rock hard , The shifter wont even move into the position where 1st is. I can drive the car in reverse , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ... there are no noises or clicks , clanks , or anything to lead me to belive it is the tranny , but i have checked the shifter cables on the trans side and the shifter side and couldnt visually see anything wrong ..... Please any help would be appricated i dont want to have to go to the dealer. Please people this is not honda and IM PISSED !!!! The tranny is cable shifted but i dont know what problems im looking for on the cables. Please post what you think if you know what your talking about .... thanks in advance.
I will be working on it tom if anyone knows there shit about vw's wants to come out and show me up , ill buy some beers or whatnot.

Not really sure of the internals of a VW tranny, but I would say a safe bet is the syncros associated with 1st. Have you drained the fluid to see if any parts came loose?

that shit happened to me a couple of times....all i did was work the shifter a little..moved it around and shit and now its fine
in my honda sometimes i cant even move the shifter to the left side in neutral...it feels rock hard, but also sometimes when i shift i hear something clicking and popping by the gear box so it may be different things, but once i usually get it on the highway, it seems to fix itself
If you go up on www.richmonddubs.com, you can talk to Golfzilla who owns a green GTI. He's the only person I can think of off-hand that's had a similar problem recently.
