Most of the time the bartending gig is filled from within. At nice places it's a sought after position that people work their way up to. To go straight to bartender you need to get into a new place, or just get very lucky.

craigslist is often looking for bartenders, from what i know, bartending at a place you actually want to work is next to impossible w/o being a barback, waiter of some sort there first.
