Tell a junkyard that you need a prindl (PRNDL) indicator, that's what they're called.

 

there's two things you could be talking about, it could be a stretched cable/bad switch/GM eco-engineering

may assumption is it's a selector switch, ether its bad or you skipped/stripped the teeth. invest in a Haynes if you plan to keep your GM P.O.S.
