Well I should have known I would end up fighting these wheel locks. I had thought about drilling out the centers and then trying an extractor tool, but can they undo things that are torqued to 90 ft lbs?
The key is what is what is technically broken. they obviously made it out of weak steel.

So I know someone else has had to do this, what is the trick in removing them? I know there is a tool out there that is specifically for removing wheel locks, but I have never seen it nor do I think I can fit it in the hole my wheel lock is in. Help me out.

 

well its a tight fit so you cant really get around it...... you need to find a tool that you can beat into it and spin.....ive removed some with rotor screw drivers....

i personally would drill the center out so the head falls off pull the wheel and change the stud out

 

Sometimes I have luck beating an old craftsman socket on there and using a breaker bar. I have the "Lug Off" tool you mentioned but there's no way it's going to fit in there.

 

yeah i was also thinking the same with drilling it out, pulling the wheel off and then replacing the stud and better wheel locks haha

 

Yeah, I think that is gonna be the easiest way. Bummer, and I wanted to put the stock wheels back on for the track.... oh well

 

I had a similar problem and I used a hammer and chisel to break it loose, and then used needle nose pliers. Not sure if that will work for yu but its worth a try if your goin to drill them out anyway. Good luck.

 

last time I had to do it, I just used a plain old 6 point socket that was barely bigger. Hammered it on, took it right off.

 

I wonder how strong the center piece of the lock is. Instead of trying to fit a socket over the whole nut, which obviously you can't do(maybe with a thinwall impact socket?). Maybe trying to hammer a 10mm or so socket over the center part of it? I know they make impact sockets that small.

 

I think that's your best bet. Then, worst case scenario it breaks the center out...then you have less to drill out. Or maybe with that gone you could even punch big Allen socket in there and try that.

 

I dont know why no one has brought up the fact that if you had the orig.package you can re-order a key .If you dont then the only way you could get that off is get a thin walled socket for removing wheel locks it just might fit in there .Sears sells them and there cheap so if you break it its not like your losing alot of money . If that dont work then the hammer and chisl is the way to go but if you have some nice wheels then i wouldnt go that route because of the chance of damageing the wheel. I work at a tire shop and lately we have been have trouble with the Mcguard key breaking (seems to be just on the front wheels ) we even had the lock shatter as well as the key . So what ever you do just take your time and be carefull its not gonna be something that is just gonna pop off .Good luck .....
