Default 1999 Civic tranny

Wanted to see if Im right on checking the tranny fluid on a manual 1999 Civic Ex.

There are 2 17mm nuts you can take off, you check the fluid with the one closest to the axle and on top? If fluid comes out or the fluid is flush with hole then your good? Also, fluid should be a light color? Thanks for any info on this.

welp thats what I did. About 2 cups came pouring out, so I put plug back on. Honda said I should be good with loosing that amount. Any other inputs? Fluid was clear to light brown.
