Hey guys, I was driving to work today when I made a passing lane change. VTEC engaged but it was different this time. It was twice as loud as normal and it did not pick up rpm like it did before it had engaged, almost like it slowed down. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear it did that. 4th gear vtec was fine.

Then I came to a stop and tried it in 1st one more time and it ran fine. Temperature was normal. It is a fresh motor with 30,XXX on it.

`95 Honda Prelude w/ H22A
Mods: Short Air Cleaner, header, full exhaust and Hondata S200 (P28). No aftermarket engine work.

UPDATE:
So I left work and the same thing was happening, this time in 1-4 gears, never tried 5th. The motor sounds like it is going to blow up because of the noise. Please help, im stuck driving the wifes ford escort!!!11!1

After normal temperatures hit, I tried vtec one more time. This time it is bogging. I drove home and parked the car. Im taking it to accuracy today hopefully, so I will let you guys know what they think is going on.

UPDATE: This evening
Car was running fine w/o vtec on the freeway, then we stopped at the store to pick something up. I turn the car back on and accelerate. Again, something else is different. Between 1000-2000 light throttle it runs fine. Give it more acceleration and there is a deep tone coming from the motor and underneath the car (leak?). I rolled the windows down and proceeded to add acceleration and there was a winding hissing noise comming from the car. When I got home, I had my wife lay down the gas pedal a bit but, could not pin point the location of the hissing. Almost like you have to be driving it to hear it. There is no pull whatsoever coming from the car. The clutch is not slipping, if that helps at all. Any ideas?

BTW, no tuning to the Hondata to my knowledge since the turbo came out.

 

My first thought is what tuning has been done with the Hondata? It would help to know what exactly you've done, and be more specific about the sound.

 

Have you check oil level and pressure?

 

I check the oil level, everything is normal.

sounds like iol pressure hit any bumps? look at the oil pan see if its squished. h22s are picky with oil pans. if you bend them a little there quick to cut oil to the pickup unit.
either that or
headgasket, compression issues starting
hondata unlikely the basemap will run your motor fine if not better than a p13 p72?

 

Some of you may have known, to others, it was the catalytic converter. I took it to the shop and had it replaced. Runs freaking great now!

 

wow the cat ?? did they replace the o2 or clean it or something ?? how owuld the cat unless completly blocked cause that ?? maybe some of the comb broke apart and coagulated or something. cool never heard of that
sounds like maybe the o2 more than the cat was at fault.

 

The honeycomb was sitting sideways inside the cat
