Default Detonation

Is this somethign cureable with just fine tuning or are there other measures that need to be taken to fix the A/F ratio?

Higher octane gas, intercoolers, water/methonal injection...all these can help stop detonation. Also liek you said a good tune will help loads.

Yes, detonation is caused by the gas being ignited before it is suppose to. So the piston is being pushed down by the explosion before it is able to move done. Now you can imagine what kind of damage this can cause. So fixing it as quickly as you can is a good idea.

While you check the AFR also make sure the timing isn't too far advanced.

Depending on how modded your ride is any competant (sp?) mechanic should be able to help. if at all costs run the highest octane you can until you have a chance to address the detonation.

he basically defined what needs to be done. plenty of fuel and keep things cool. they make coatings for pistons and other internals that keep things cooler. you can also have your water passages ported to allow the engine to stay cooler. install a fuel cooler. and of course have everthing dyno tuned.

This is a random post, do you have any more details?

I mean, is this a modified motor we are talking about? stock? did you just perform maintenance?

Higher octane gas would only HELP with detonation if it was timing related most likely..

Huh? Higher octane gas is more resistant to detonation, it doesn't have a preference of when or when not to detonate.
