Saw there were a few topics in other areas about gas prices.. Thought maybe I'd start a place where we could post good deals on gas, or maybe warn about places that will rip you a new one. I'm usually very brand loyal with my gas, but at $3.00/gallon, I'm starting to question how loyal I am.

On my way to work this morning I passed a few places that were $3.00+ a gallon. $3.01 in particular, at Shell. I looked down at my gas gauge--damn.. 1/4 tank.. Think it's going to continue going up, or level out?

 

Yeah, when my brother got back from class this morning he told me he saw a few places that were 2.95-3.00/gallon for premium..

The feeling is mutual.

SHEETZ on apperson/419 is $2.99 for prenium and this was last nite, it probably went up by now

i know gas prices were some what high already but its a damn shame that these companies are taking advantage of everybody because of the hurricane , i was in new jersey over the weekend and the gas was 2.95 for 87 , 3.15 for 93 and 2.85 for diesel and i asked a station attendant if the hurricane was causing these prices to increase?, and she said no, but they were expected to go up this week. glad to be back home.

 

I don't think they're necessarily taking advantage of us.. The price of a barrel of oil is over $70 now if I recall correctly.. That directly impacts how much gasoline costs. The hurricane disrupted everything in the gulf, and we were relying heavily on those refineries for our oil and inevitably our gasoline. They could probably sell gas a little cheaper and still make money, but I don't think they're just upping the price to make some extra cash.

But yeah, it hurts to pay that much for gas. Before I started driving I remember gas was less than a buck for regular and MAYBE like $1.03 for premium at the time. I can only imagine how nice that must have been..

 

yea back in 97 when i got my first car, it costs $9.46 to fill it up.....i would drive to roanoke and it be $.68/gal those were the good ol' days

 

Actually, it doesn't. A good friend of mine is the vice president of the Exxon distributor for the area. Those $70 barrels of oil won't become gas for at least 7 years. The gas that we are putting in our tanks now has been in the country in the form of gasoline for at least 5 years.

Yes, somewhere down the road they are going to have to use those $70 barrels, but the price won't reflect it at the time. And, while we're on the subject, the hurricane has no direct impact on the price of oil barrels, no matter what the news tells you.

Ever wonder why gas prices don't go up and down all the time in other parts of the world? It has to do with the relationship that our country has with oil-producing countries. Japanese gas (which is 100 octane I believe) is still around $2 per gallon, and has been for three or four years. I haven't talked to anyone in Europe, but from what I've heard the story is similar there.

However, at least we can rest assured that the gas stations aren't to blame. They only make a few cents on every gallon they sell. Their prices change when the distributors tell them to change them.
