That is messed up! Well I bought my wheels and tires from him back in the day for my cavalier and 6 mos. after i got them the tires started to slip open on the side walls, so i took them to him and he wouldn't do anything about it...said it was normal. So I said fine and left. A couple months later. One of the tires blew out on me. He's lucky I didn't wreck otherwise he would have been sued! After it blew out I took them back and then he decided to give me a new set of tires which was great but it took the damn thing blowing out before he would do that.
As for your car being a 5spd, they make automatic start kits that will disengage the clutch so you can still use it on a 5 speed.
