Hey E36DJ, what's shakin'.

I just thought I'd add my $0.02. Ok, it sounds like you want to piece together a turbo kit. That's cool and all but you gotta think of this as a project car. And if you plan on doing a project car, start off by doubling the price you think it's gonna take. It's called Murphy's Law, shit's gonna happen. But if you can get it up and running for $5K without fabbing the parts yourself, I'll come up to Fairfax and shake your hand myself. I've been looking into F/I for our cars for years now and $8K is about the lowest you can go for a finished car by piecing everything together. (And still using quality parts.) And my next question what do you plan on doing when something breaks? If it's gonna take you three months to save up for a turbo, what are you gonna do if you blow a headgasket or if you blow out a clutch? Do you relize how fast you will just run through tires? (It gets real expensive.) My firend's cousin has an AA Stage 5 M3 and that thing is always in the shop. I'm not putting you down by no means, it just sounds like you need to relize what the entire project will cost you. (Basically a lot more than $5K.)

Have you thought hard about going to a supercharger? It would be cheaper, more reliable and a nice sleeper. Especailly now since you can pick up a used Dinan or RMS for around $3K and then get custom software from AA for $800. Then you would have a fast, reliable car that will put the hurtin on most of the cars out there. Or you can do what I plan on doing, get the Eurosport Twin-Screw for $7K when it comes out next month. It'll put down more power than a pieced turbo system, Jim Conforti did the software so you know that's perfect, it'll be reliable, and pretty much the only thing you'd need for it is a boost gauge and a stronger clutch. I'm waiting for Neil (from bimmerforums) to get his back in April and then I'm going make a trip up there and check it out before I pull the trigger; he's the beta tester for the M Coupe/Roadster. (Or I might say 'fuck it' and get an M5.) Just something else to consider.

Matt

Blah, you have some good insight, forced induction is expensive. My friend has a turbo rsx and has spent a lot more time and money than just the $4K bolt on kit. He's on his third clutch to start with and misc. shit will break here and there. Good luck though.

This is depressing, I've looked into a lot of stuff and I think I might be able to take care of it.

I'd rather go turbo than a supercharger for many reasons, I like the twin screw but honestly it doesn't put down THAT much HP, and isn't even CLOSE to being worth 7k, they are on crack and everyone in that thread on bimmerforums seems to think it's justified, or maybe they are just kissing Jim's ass, I don't know.

I know about the double price thing, I've been reading about this stuff for years and all.

Hmmm I'll figure something out.

Did seeing Dado's Yellow M3 in the new Mischiff Invation Video make you wanna go the turbo route? Cause his car is just plain sick now. It made 458 WHP @ 17PSI on a little 20g!

I think it's justified because it won't blow your motor up. Which is a lot more than you can say for all the other options out there. (Except maybe Dinan, but they are too conservative anyways.) Yes, half of the people in that thread are there to kiss Jim's ass.

The system itself is impressive. (One of the nicest to come around in a long time.) It puts down 343 to the wheels on 8 psi and you can install it in a weekend. The potential of it is huge considering that they are using the largest pulley available for that supercharger. I think the person holding it back from the limits is J.C. because he's all about not putting any stress on the engine or enviornment. If you run a header. track pipes, 12 psi and water injection with the proper tuning; you'll be well over 400 at the wheels. But I can completely understand why you would want to go with a turbo; it all comes down to personal preferance at the end. Good luck in whichever you decide to go for.

I'm still baffled why AA still uses the Mitsubishi turbos. I'd think by now they would step-up to a nicer (and bigger) Garret set-up. Think about it, the S52 displaces more than a 2JZ (Supra), 3.2 to 3.0 respectively. Would anyone in their right mind put a 20g on a Supra?? I don't think so either.
