What's a legit HID kit to buy?
Some HID kits are just HID bulbs that go into the stock reflector just like the stock bulb (like the link in the next post). These don't work very well, because the HID beam pattern is very different than a standard bulb. HID bulbs that are made to go into the same housing (OEM ones mostly) are designed to work with that housing, not just some generic drop in replacement. That's why HID retrofits have a crap beam pattern and blind everyone on the road. There is more to a headlight than just putting out some light in front of the car.
The decent non-OEM HID kits come with a projector-type reflector which is actually designed for the bulb. They take a lot more modification than the bulb-only type (you have to integrate a couple inch diameter reflector into the stock headlight housing), but the results are much better and they actually work well. This is the next best thing to an actual OEM setup.

I have to admit guilt here, i have HID's in my normal lenses for my vette. When i first put them in, i had to adjust them a little....first night on the road i could see peoples faces in there rear view mirriors..
It was no good, i was blinding the shit out of anyone i was behind. As much as i dont care to be an asshole, i adjusted them again and pointed them much lower. I dont have that problem anymore, and they still put out 10x as much light as my crappy oem bulbs. A true projector is the way to go, but usually pretty damn costly depending on the car.
I also have the xenotek system.
