Not a trident, with the 3-pronged spears they can tend to squirm between the barbs and get away. I prefer the 4-pronged as I haven't had one get away yet with those. They even make 5-pronged, but my opinion on that is that its just too many barbs and you could fuck the meat up. But yes, while the other guy freezes him with the light, you move slowly up and gig the fucker with the spear, er trident. There's also a 100% chance of shooting at least one snake.

Yes, gigging is 99% more redneck than anyone on this board has probably done, but it is such good fun. A little fishing can be done before hand to help kill some time waiting for night as well.

I had some friends almost get arrested frog gigging last month in a water retention pond behind a middle school, at 11:00 pm.
The story is too long to post, but apparently the police on the scene had never heard of frog gigging, and this was in a redneck part of town.
I'm going to have to try this out.

 

Well its my property so no cops to worry about.

 

They were using a 15 foot sailboat, with no sail, mast, or paddles.
They used 2x4's to paddle, so the officer must have been stunned to see it.
Even better they brought the boat in with an F150 with a 6 foot bed.
