or is it any engine load during warmer weather?
Its coming out between the engine and tranny. The engine is up to temp and and it does it about 3/4 way up the mountain going 45-55mph engine not reving hard or anything and it pulls the mountain well. I think the tranny is on its way out and just as you said overheating the fluid.

I would start by dropping the pan, replacing the filter and fluid and inspecting the cooler (and its lines for clogs like you said) as well as the valve body gasket (see if there's any gasket material or remnants in the bottom of the pan or sucked up into the filter's metal grate).

Transmission fluid expands when it's overheated, it's sounds like the fluid you have in there may be getting a touch old, or have a little water in it so it COULD potentially boil when it starts to heat up a little over operating temp (200+ degrees). I really recommend a fluid change and maybe the Lucas brand additive to reduce any moisture that may have seeped in. Make sure you put the correct amount of fluid in as well.

just my $.02
I just changed the fluid and filter before hunting season nothing was in the pan then, I just changed it again this evening and nothing was in the pan this time either.

true. didnt think of old fluid with water in it. deff sounds like overheating to me for the overflowing. i had to stop and let it cool down about 4 times on our obx trip in october. tranny had NO gears at all.

your checklist for now: new fluid, filter, pan gasket. clean the pan while its off too.
post a pic of the fluid.

and since you just got the truck and have no idea if its been serviced lately and while your tranny is still working right(as long as new fluid works), do this before its to late: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=158160
Its strange because even after pushing the fluid out it shifts perfect the rest of the way home. I made sure its not over filled when i fill it back up. Its done it 3 times now and only when it was above 60 outside.

Service was done at my buddies shop when i first got it because it was obvious that maintenance was lacking.

how was the fluid both times?
since you said between the engine and tranny, thats the front seal. its expands and the fluid seeps out. when it cools back down it shrinks back down and all is fine.
i would tap the pan for a DRAIN lol and a temp sensor. get yourself a gauge for it. personally i have never seen fluid drip out of mine. even tho its broke and not shifting. but mine may be related to it just being broke alltogether.

i mounted a 2nd stock cooler on mine. or you can just get an e-fan on the one you have now.

but if youre fluid looks good and its just overheating then, get a gauge installed and watch it to be sure.

Yeah I should put a drain on it and a temp guage for sure. The fluid that was in it when I bought it was filthy and you could tell it had been a LONG time since it had been changed. The fluid in it now looks decent but not perfect because of corse you can't get all of the old fluid out when you do a fluid and filter change. The front seal is what I was suspecting as well but every tranny shop I have talked to said its getting hot because its eating itself up so who knows. I got a second cooler for it and was going to run them in series but my buddy told me it wouldn't do any good. The truck has 187,000 miles on it so I figure the tranny is probably about at the end of its life no matter what. I might just try to locate a 5 speed swap for it and be done with it.

drag, did you find much metal shavings or anything weird on the pan magnet last time? i would try and add another cooler, maybe a bigger one then just another stock one. is the tranny 187k also? i highly doubt it, they dont really last that long lol
try that band adjustment link i posted. it may not help, but it cant hurt either.

caleb, seems everybody is having tranny issues. it doesnt look good that 3/4 are exploders and 4/4 are fords tho lol
is it on tight? did you put the gasket on(just makin sure....)? maybe its not the right gasket(i know autozone had weird shit for my engine oil pan one..)?

rusty, im sure if it was summer and i shove crap in there to stretch them out, theyd go on. but im just gonna abandon the idea. 16.5 is just a bad egg to mess with anyway

brandon, gayleb refuses to buy an exploder. ive tried many times. so i can say its not gonna happen. but if you had a v8 and the newer hatch/front bumper i wouldve loved to have it
