jesus. Have that battery tested before you replace it. Advance Auto does it for free. Make sure there's not more serious problems lurking in there.

+1. Test the battery before throwing money at it. Could be a myriad of other electrical gotchas.

Regulator/rectifier. Pretty much the voltage regulator. If its burned it won't regulate the current from the stator and the bike will try to run just off the battery. Which MAY be why the battery is toast (if the battery test comes up bad). Get the battery tested first, though. Then you can troubleshoot from there.

or worse... the reg/rec blew and took some wiring along with it
