I don't know what the gap was between first and second place but it was huge. Every time they passed us he had a different person in front of and behind him. He was lapping people! lol
Mladin was freakin awesome, He would talk to anybody (plus the accent is hilarious). Spies was more a recluse, I just think he does not handle large groups of people well.
I think Earl Hayden was the coolest person there. During one of the races i was in Roger Lee's pit and he was there asked about the shirt i had on then we started shootin the shit. Cool old dude

It really was as bad as it looked, I was hoping it was all precautionary since they were kids... RIP

I just saw that on roadracingworld.com.

I saw the accident on the big screen at the track, and was wondering if theyd replay it. Im guessing not after his death. Thats a horrible loss.

Wish I could have been there, missed it this year. Was Spies really an ass? I covered the AMA events at VIR for years and I always liked Spies. I talked to him at length his rookie year and he was one of the nicest racers I'd ever met. I actually ran into him leaving the AMA media tent, Spies wasn't big enough yet to be included in the interviews. Super nice guy at that time though, I hope success hasn't turned him. The only AMA racer that I really dislike is Aaron Yates. That guy really is a dick. I'd like to give him a good hard kick in the nuts.

In my experience, yes, he's a dick.

Maybe others have had different experiences but I've heard from people all over the place that have met him at various events and said he was a douche.

Thats wierd because I've only heard the exact opposite from those that have met Yates. For people that only know him from TV a lot think he's an asshole because of stuff like laying on the track to get the race red flagged and drop kicking Fania, but everyone who has spoken to him personally says he is extremely down to earth and a favorite rider.

The two times I've spoken to him he was a total cock. I'm sure talking to the media, and probably even more so the local media, isn't most riders' favorite thing to do, but it's part of the job, and most of the other guys are at least courteous and respectful. Yates just goes out of his way to let you know he'd rather be doing anything other than answering your stupid questions, and in fact is probably fantasizing about drop kicking you right after he finishes delivering his canned answer. He's a first class asshole.

BTW, probably the nicest MC racer I've interviewed by far is Steve Rapp. Really cool down to earth guy, easy to talk to, willing to give you his time, etc. He's one of those guys that after you talk to him you really just want to see him win. Great guy. The Haydens are all super nice, Tommy is a little awkward in sort of a shy way, but real nice. I liked Spies a lot when I spoke with him, but it was a long time ago. Mladin, Duhamel, John Ulrich...hell most of the guys I've talked were great, Yates not so much.
