i would advise against putting a harness in a car that is not attached to a roll cage. do some research if this is the case.

Definately do NOT bolt your harness to the floor. Talk about spine compression in an accident. Get a harness bar at the very least, or even a 2 point cage/harness bar would work better because of the added support and not much more cost involved than just the harness bar.

 

FamousTLB is right. You HAVE TO attach the top straps to something that is directly behind you. DO NOT attach them at the seat bolts or anywhere lower than the top of the seat. If you get in an accident you won't have that tiny amount of play that you need to keep your spine from emulating a telescope. Also leave the stock seat belts in if your putting a harness in your DD. IIRC the only harness that is DOT approved are the Schroth Rally ones. If you get pulled over with anything else you run the risk of a seat belt ticket, even with them you can still get the ticket depending on the cop.

 

There is a lot of truth in this thread. harnesses mounted to floor or off to an angle is the worse idea. That is unless you like to walk like the hunch back of noter diam after a collision. IMHO its better to use factory seat belts until you can either properly mount the harnesses or get a cage to mount them in another proper way.

 

Yeah... lucky my car came with a bar that stretches spans the back behind the seat creating that ideal 90 degree angle. What kinda car do you drive, people might be able to point you in the right direction for the other stuff you need.

 

I have a 99 civic ex coupe and was thinking about buying the sparco bar that goes behind the front seats is that good??

 

It'll keep you from compounding your spine, does it weld in? I don't know how civics are, mine bolts to the top of two towers.

 

The Sparco bars bolt to the seatbelt bolts usually.

 

I wouldn't worry about it.............they don't go fast enough to warrant anything more than the safety that a stock system provides you. If you are actually going to take it to a track and want or need the extra security or want to minimize sliding around then please read some articles concerning the proper way to install such equipment. I have seen several setups that were improperly made up at the track. Some were downright ignorant. I would give you several good sites but I am in my car and not at my desk.


I personally use Sparco 6-point camlock harnesses.
