usually on older cbr600's, you'll know when they're starting to go b/c they'll rattle alot when you first start the bike, then get quiet. you don't want to go too terrible long with a tensioner that's getting ready to go. when it finally lets go (meaning it's ALWAYS rattling) you run the risk of jumping cam timing, hard parts hitting hard parts in the motor.. and you're gonna need ALOT more than a $60 tensioner to fix it.

mine went on my 94 F2 at just over 28000 miles. first start up or 2 i would hear nothing but after a few start ups i would hear it rattle. i was riding down great neck and down shifted to stop at the light in front of cox and the oil light popped on and the bike just died, would not start back up. threw the ape in and all has been good.
