Norfolk is aways hiring...Ive worked for them about 2 1/2 years and love it!
Yes we do get beat down on the medic sometimes but I would rather ride the medic and have my schedule than no medic and va beach's schedule.
Plus we probably get the most fire out of the cities in hamptonroads.

But as far as getting in another department first...its not really worth it because you will still have to go through another academy and the whole hiring process again when u wanna switch. And they dont care (atleast in norfolk) if you already have emt...you still gotta do it all over in academy...and getted treated just like everyone else.

Any questions just let me know

my best friend was working for chesapeake as their courier, missed the test in by a few points the first time, and now he is currently employed with Navy Regional FD(civilian on base). from what ive heard from him and a lot of other "city" boys, its the place to be. and apparently it is a big thing if you get in. the last time they hired before 2006 was 20 years prior. he got lucky. his dad has been a captain with NRFD for YEARS. bubt his dad only helped him out so much, he had to go through intense training and testing. im proud of him, because he set his mind to it and followed through. oh, and hes 23 and making $56K(GS-7?) in his first 6 months on the job. good luck man.

I'm confused. Doesn't Norfolk still participate in the TRFA? Why would you have to go to another academy if you stay in the region?

The Federal FD schedule sucks though; they work more than civilian FDs. There is built in overtime in their salary.

i thought the same thing kev.and if your nationally registered emt/emt-i/medic i was pretty sure you would be excepted and not have to take the whole course over again.youd just have to challenge and pass the written. but i dont work there, so im not certain.

Yes if you have TRFA they might let you in with just a refresher course , Havent ever seen it done though. But all cities around here arent TRFA. I believe only Norfolk, Newport News and The Beach, maybe Suffolk. But I know Va beach wont except anyone with TRFA unless it was through them.
