NASA @ VIR Feb. 23-25
LOL it's all good Doug. I totally understand your point above, but instruction is what you make of it IMHO. It is an excellent privilege but some people think of it as a burden and can't wait to go solo (not necessarily you) and I believe they are missing a very important learning opportunity as a result. Things like the fast line through T16-T17 at VIR are generally not taught in HPDE1-2, but can be taught in HPDE3 upon request, and might never be found on your own. Even as an instructor the best seat time I ever get is when I can convince (bribe? lol) a racer or another instructor to sit with me... because there's always something to improve upon.
FWIW I can recommend some NASA instructors who are happy to be more aggressive from the shotgun seat so you can progress as quickly as you wish. And at any rate I applaud your goals and wish you the best of luck as you climb the ladder of speed

LOL yep, Hog Pen onto the front straight. It's not something I can (or should) really explain unless we're at the track, in a car. Just do what your instructor tells you to do, and go from there.
And for the record, what your friend told you is... incorrect.
No offense intended,
Jon

Re-reading your post, it looks like you're thinking of Oak Tree (T11-T12) instead of Hog Pen (T16-T17)... in which case the 4th to 3rd to 2nd is correct for most cars. Reminder map:

Enough armchair instructing, can we go drive yet??? Will Feb 23rd ever get here??? LOL...

Your friend started this some 32 years ago.... (VIR closed in 1974) So some one who has experiance in a car like what you are driving would be more benificial IMO. Remember FWD track day perped hondas and nissans are going faster than most of the "club" race cars from 25-30 years ago. Also watching a video is nothing like having someone in the car with you telling you to put your wheel on this spot and go. And when you do it you carry 4-5 more mph out of a corner. I am with Jon instruction is what you make of it.
