Default Mis-Shift, 3-2 on highway, DSM

So I decided to do a highway run and check out my trims and get some data logged. From 80'ish (I believe) I hit 2nd gear and waaay over-revved for about 1 full second. Ran fine after 2 more runs... on my way home my car started whining as I let the rpm's fall while in gear. I figured the T-case was going. As long as it was accelerating it didn't whine. Got home and it worsens @ idle in neutral. Pop the hood: oil dipstick is halfway out, and my block is pinging & pounding to shit. Sounds like pistons are smacking the head too. No noises from head, but could possibly be warped anyways. No smoking anywhere, not even exhaust. My guess is I threw a rod or two, and timing jumped a lil?
Thanks, looking into new motor unless anyone has an idea. May also be selling my "New in Box" 272 cams, ARP head studs (1G), and "Revised 3mm" lifters.

Line up all the timing marks and make sure that it didn't jump. If the marks are good, then you might want to pull the valve cover and check the valve train. Give it a good lookover for anything that looks amiss. If the marks are off, when you pull the valve cover, you will definitely know that things are afu. Most likely you will see that the corresponding rollers are loose or out of position entirely. If that's the case, pull the head and look deeper.

From the noises and symptoms you're describing, it sounds like the motor may have jumped timing. Worse case, you bent some valves up, and probably cracked the corresponding valve guides in the process. If that's the case, pull the head and inspect the pistons. You can get by with some minor indentions on the tops of the pistons.

On previous DSM's, I've gone through a few heads, but have never had to replace bottom end components.

If it's a 2G and you need a head, give me a shout, I've got one available. If you need any help, let me know and I may be able to give you a hand.

I think I'll give that a try tomorrow if it's not raining. My car's a 1G AWD, and have another head in my room. It clanks and pings while I'm cranking it over, gets violent on start up, then stops for 3-4 seconds, and starts again, etc. in that order and cycles over, and over (all while car's running). Thanks for the tip Slo_DSM!

I would definitely not try and start it anymore if it's making all that noise. If you dropped a valve or more, you really risk ventilating a piston. The one light at the end of the tunnel is that breaking shit just gives reason to replace it all with better stuff..

Is the bottom end stock? If so, it just gives you a reason to upgrade.

Head and bottom were stock, b'c my cams, lifters, and studs didn't make it here yet . Just gotta find someone who could either help or do install of new motor if purchased.

Yeah, it sure does... I think I remember you telling me about it when I came by; which as you see I ended up having to sell the turbo . Trying to sell my parts that just came in the mail now. If you need any let me know, they're listed for sale. Also, I'll trade for suspension, turboes, etc.

Hey thanks HighPSI. Unfortunately I won't have the joy and triumph/accomplishment of building one (a couple of my "tuner-ism" points can be stripped from me now ). Purchasing UltraVtec757's engine.
